SEND PE Activities — Inclusive Games & Adaptations

Free SEND PE activities and inclusive games with step-by-step adaptations, seated options and communication supports, so every pupil can take part in PE.

Inclusion in PE isn't a separate lesson — it's an adaptation to the lesson you're already teaching. These SEND PE activities give you one simple, practical adaptation at a time: change the equipment, the space, the rules or the communication, and the same game includes everyone.

Every inclusive activity includes the objective, the setup, the adaptations and the success criteria — structure teachers tell us is the single biggest help when including pupils with SEND. For deeper support, the SEND & Inclusive PE library adds seated games, visual supports and communication boards.

FREE ACTIVITY OF THE DAY

Inclusive Zone Ball

All ages 10–15 minutes 1 soft ball, 4 cones

A zone-based ball game where the zones do the differentiating — every pupil competes in a zone that suits them, in the same game at the same time.

Set-up: Split a hall or playground into 3 zones with cones. Split the class across the zones.

How to play

  1. 1Zones play the same ball game (keep possession, score in the opposing zone) with different rules per zone.
  2. 2Zone 1: standard rules. Zone 2: bigger targets and no intercepting. Zone 3: seated play, rolling ball, unlimited catches.
  3. 3Rotate zones every 3 minutes so every pupil experiences every version.
  4. 4Ask pupils which zone gave them the best challenge — their answers guide your next lesson.

Teaching points

  • Move pupils between zones when they're ready — challenge should stretch, not exclude.
  • Keep the ball soft and the scoring generous; success first, refinement second.

Questions teachers ask

How do I adapt a PE lesson for pupils with SEND?

Adapt one variable at a time: equipment (bigger, softer, slower), space (smaller zones, wider targets), rules (fewer defenders, unlimited touches) or communication (visual cards, now-and-next boards). Every activity in our SEND library lists these adaptations explicitly.

Can SEND pupils be assessed in PE fairly?

Yes — assess against the pupil's own starting point using step-based success criteria rather than age expectations. Sports I records SEND adaptations alongside assessments so progress is measured fairly.
