Defeat builds emotional control, resilience and reflection.
By Phil "CoachRose" Rose — Founder & Director of Sports, UK PE Group — part of the CoachRose Insights Young Athlete Development series.
Nobody enjoys losing. But young athletes need the experience.
If children are protected from every difficult moment, they never learn how to respond when things go wrong. Losing teaches a young athlete how to handle disappointment, control emotions, respect opponents, analyse mistakes and come back to training.
A bad match doesn’t define an athlete. The response to it does.
