Natural ability helps, but work habits determine long-term progress.
By Phil "CoachRose" Rose — Founder & Director of Sports, UK PE Group — part of the CoachRose Insights Young Athlete Development series.
Talent gets a young athlete noticed. It does not, on its own, take them anywhere lasting.
Some children are quicker, stronger or more coordinated early on. That can feel like a guarantee of future success. It rarely is. The athletes who keep improving are the ones who learn how to practise, how to respond to setbacks and how to keep working when progress slows.
Talent is a starting point. Practice builds ability. Consistency builds athletes. Character builds people.
