Real confidence comes from preparation and competence.
By Phil "CoachRose" Rose — Founder & Director of Sports, UK PE Group — part of the CoachRose Insights Young Athlete Development series.
Telling a child “you’re amazing” feels supportive. On its own, it isn’t confidence.
Real confidence is earned through preparation — “I’ve trained for this, I’ve practised this skill, I’ve faced this before, I know what to do when it goes wrong.” That is confidence an athlete can rely on when it matters.
Empty praise makes setbacks harder. Preparation makes them manageable.
