PE Games for Primary School

PE games for primary school — EYFS, KS1 and KS2 games with teaching points, equipment lists and SEND adaptations, from UK PE Group's coaching team.

Primary PE games should keep every child moving, teach one clear skill, and finish with a smile. These games come from 20+ years of coaching in primary schools — built for real classes of 30, real halls and playgrounds, and mixed ability in the same lesson.

Filter by key stage, sport or how much space you have. Every game includes teaching points and adaptations, and the full library in Sports I sequences them into complete units with assessment built in.

FREE ACTIVITY OF THE DAY

Traffic Light Movers

EYFS / KS1 5–10 minutes No equipment

The classic body-control warm-up, structured so even the youngest pupils learn listening, stopping and movement control in the first week of term.

Set-up: Open space, pupils scattered. You are the traffic light.

How to play

  1. 1Green = move anywhere in the space. Amber = slow, careful movements. Red = freeze like a statue.
  2. 2Add commands one at a time: 'Green — jogging', 'Red — balance on one leg', 'Amber — giant steps'.
  3. 3Once pupils know the commands, let a pupil take over as the traffic light.
  4. 4Finish with a 30-second round of silent traffic lights — pupils respond to your hand signals only.

Teaching points

  • Freezing should be completely still — that stillness is the skill.
  • Progress from walking to jogging to direction changes as control improves.

Questions teachers ask

How many PE lessons should primary schools have each week?

The national expectation is at least 2 hours of PE per week, plus opportunities for physical activity before, during and after school. Sports I timetabling helps schools protect and plan those hours.

Are the games matched to the national curriculum?

Yes — every game and lesson is tagged to its key stage, sport and curriculum strand, so you can build coverage across the year rather than repeating the same games.
