PE Brain Teasers & Active Thinking Games

Free PE brain teasers — problem-solving and active-thinking games that challenge bodies and brains, perfect for indoor PE, wet weather and OAA.

PE brain teasers make pupils think while they move — a puzzle to solve as a team, where the answer is a pattern, a strategy or a piece of creative problem-solving. They're gold dust for wet weather, indoor lessons and OAA weeks.

Each teaser has one right answer hiding in plain sight, but the learning is in the teamwork: listening, proposing ideas, testing, failing, adjusting. That's the OAA strand done properly.

FREE ACTIVITY OF THE DAY

Silent Line-Up

All ages 10 minutes No equipment

The team must line up in order — birthday month, height, first-letter of middle name — without speaking. Communication without words is the lesson.

Set-up: Open space with a clear start and end line.

How to play

  1. 1Announce the order (e.g. January to December by birthday) and the one rule: complete silence.
  2. 2The team has 3 minutes to line up in the correct order.
  3. 3Check the answer together — months out loud from the line.
  4. 4Repeat with a harder criterion and a shorter time limit.

Teaching points

  • Debrief the strategies, not the result — who proposed ideas, who tested them.
  • Ideal cover lesson, wet-weather lesson and first-week icebreaker.

Questions teachers ask

What are PE brain teasers?

Physical problem-solving games where teams must think as well as move — line-ups, patterns, silent challenges and strategy puzzles. They develop the OAA (outdoor and adventurous activities) thinking skills of the PE curriculum.

When do brain teasers work best?

Wet-weather indoor lessons, cover lessons, the first week of term, and as the problem-solving strand of OAA units.
